sorry It's taken me so long to get back to you guys...okay. Here's what I've done so far. i've installed both D-fend and dosbox onto my desktop, and all hte games are located at C:\downloads

I've typed in the little extra info in hte notepad info on dosbox and have now exhausted all option I am aware of to get games to run in dosbox. Very confusing. Because it LOOKS like it should work, but then I get a bad command or file name. You know what's ironic about that? That's all I remember from DOS as a kid too! Is there anything I'm not telling you that I should be? cuz I'm not sure what info you need. Just let me kdnow Happy

if all the games are located in c:\downloads then
type mount c c:\downloads (Assuming you dont have a drive on c)

by the way, here's what it said when I typet the mout thing: in blue it said
usage: MOUNT drive-letter local-directory

So a MOUNT c C:\windows mounts windows directory as the c: drive in dosbox

then I tried typing in cd c:|downloads\cosmo and it said:
unable to change to c:\downloads\cosmo

you get me intruiged, let's try an other angle of aproach:
First thing to do:
BE 100% SURE OF YOUR EXCACT PATH ! check it in explorer !!

let's try to mount your cosmo folder as drive root, makes that you are directly in your folder:
Type it excacly like below:
If you get the bleu message bla unable bla then you have or a typo or your path is wrong.<enter> means hit your enter key (joky Happy )

mount c c:/downloads\cosmo<enter>
you get blabla cosmo mounted as c:/ ...blabla
c:<enter>
dir<enter>

you should get the file list of <cosmo>folder.
Let us know what you get and then we gonna take the next step.... Happy

PS: there is something i ask myself now: Have you unzipped the downloaded file ????If you haven't you don't have a cosmo folder, only a cosmo file that FIRST of all needs unzip !!
Once again ::CHECK YOUR PATH !!

okay, when I type in EXACTLY what you wrote, it tells me that the directory doesn't exist. Maybe it's not unzipped, but I used the wizard to unpack everything...I'm pretty sure I unzipped the file (i'm trying to run keen dreams now)...it's got all the files and extensions in downloads now....and I know the path is corect: C:\downloads.

Oh, and I registered on your page and it's telling my my username/password are incorrect. Man, I just can't get anything to work right!

I was hoping to PM you guys, but I'll just ask you on hte forum. I had a friend do something REALLY cool a while back...he was able to somehow control my mouse over the internet and installed everything for me from his dorm room. I don't remember how he did it, but perhaps one of you knows how to do it. I[d be willing to let you guys do that....it's not like there's anything of great importance on my computer, and all hte personal stuff is passcoded. You can e-mail me at snip@snip.snip if you think you know how to pull it off.

About that pm thing: One of the reasons the forum excist is to give help to people, if we helping you over the pm we are helping one person, not people.Others who visit the forum and read the topics also get helped.

About helping you over the internet: yes , i can do that, the same remarq of above ,you will indeed be helped, nobody else ,the next time we have to get a 'newbie' on the road ,everything starts all over again. If it is on a topic we can point them to the appropiate topic. Yes ?And you seem very trustfull towards other people you even haven't met or know, with that internet on distance i could blown your whole pc to hell, yes.
(Not that i would...maybe Malevolent and your passcodes are a joke for an old dos hacker ,believe me, hint:*.pwl file...)

That being said:
You want a go now with keen dreams.
That rightclick ,mmmm..no.Use the explorer to find the correct path.
Another good way is to go to your "start" button, find files and let windows search for:
Kdreams.exe
If windows find it WRITE the correct path up
If windows can't find it there is something wrong with your unzip.Re-unzip it and be aware of where you unzip it (folder ?)
My advise would be to re-unzip it anyway, and give it a good usuable path/folder.
I suggest:

c:\games\kdreams

Then search for cosmo.zip and unzip that one to:

c:\games\cosmo

In the future always use a intelligent path, you don't want your pc crippled with useless files and folders crawling around your C drive. So use the games folder to store your games in their own subfolder.Gets pretty workable that way, yes ?Let's keep a kind of a clean system, where you can find something back.

OK, when you are so far you gonna start dosbox

You will get a Z: prompt, that's the normal way for dosbox to startup,if you get something else ,deinstall dosbox, and reinstall dosbox, that should be the best thing to do.
When you so far:

At the z: prompt type:

mount c c:/games\keendreams<enter>
you get a blabla is mounted as c:
NOT: mount c:|games\keendreams as you mentioned before,it's slasch and backslash!!!
type :
c:<enter>

type :
dir<enter>

you should get a listing of files, when you look at it you will see a file call'd
KDREAMS.EXE and a START.EXE,you can use both to start the game up,
if you use the start you get a preview screen, but it's easier to use kdreams
so on the c: prompt type:
kdreams<enter>

your game should start up and get running now.

Let us know how it goes,IF you get error messages it's important that you
can tell us precisely what it is.

Just give it a good and firm tryout, the joy you gonna have when you will have learned how to get a game running, well you'll see...

Good luck and don't let a game pull you down, you should know what I have crawled around when i started in the year eeuurh ..the year...shit i can even remeber when i started up, getting old the boy (49).
Good luck windows kitten.
Happy

If you want to print the epistle put your mouse pointer in a corner, left button and hold, bring the pointer down to select the text and rightclick to copy and paste it in wordpad or so.....

yeah....I'm strange about my computer. When I can't make it go anymore, I thorw up my hands and ask other people to fix it for me. I tend not to care about the consequences much when I hit a certain point of irritation.

Anyway, so I've got two new folders in downloads (I checked the explorer path. It's right...c:\downloads) tired to cange the name to games...wouldn't let me. Anyway, re-unzipped everything to a new folder in downloads called keendreams. It told me drive c was already mounted with a local directory c:\

By the way...great use of hte word epistle....I rarely see it these days outside of Biblical circles.

Allright now we are getting somewhere.
You ain't finished yet.
Open explorer, highlight c:,go to files button, select 'new' select 'folder' and you get a new folder on your c:,rename that one to:Games, now open your downloads folder, select with left your keen folder and drag it to games, should be in games now were it belongs.
There is a reason why i advise you to do this, when you will get more games and folders ,you really need some kind of a system to keep a overview or you will loose hugh amounts of time searching around.

"It told me drive c was already mounted with a local directory c:\"
Who told you that? dosbox ?if so: deinstall and reinstall, reread the above
epistle, get him started as original in z:, the reason will become clear later.

Also i have made a fault, not folder KEENDREAMS but KDREAMS, keendreams is to long and dos can't handle filenames longer then 8 characters,it will make something like keendr~1 of it ,so:rename keendreams to kdreams, sorry for that, nobody's perfect.

Now we gonna try a little trick to get your life easier and start all those nice dosgames you can get here on the dosgames.

Open notepad,NOT wordpad or word,notepad,
This is the text you need to put in:

cd..
cd kdreams
start

Don't make any typo's use 'copy' and 'paste' to get those lines in notepad.
Then save it as keengo.bat in your c:\games folder, select "all files" or else windows will save it as keengo.bat.txt !!
So: in your c:\games folder you must now have a keengo.bat and a kdreams folder.Keengo.bat must be in the games folder, not in the kdreams subfolder be sure of it! yes ?

yes? ok here we go again...
start dosbox....should be in z:
at the prompt type:

mount c c:/games<enter>

you get bla...etcetera mounted as c bla bla

type:
c:<enter>
your prompt will now change to c:
what it means is that your games folder now is c: root for dosbox and all your folders stored in it,also it mean that dos can see and read anything in it.
DO NOT USE THE DOWNLOAD FOLDER!DO WHAT I TOLD YOU ABOVE AND MAKE A NEW GAMES FOLDER WITH SUBFOLDERS FOR YOUR GAMES.

and now type
keengo<enter>
dosbox will read the keengo.bat and execute it .
For every game you install in your gamesfolder make a *.bat to start it up,saves you the hassle to retype every time the same, just replace the lines

cd kreams
start

by the appropiate commands and save it with a logic name.If you install cosmo in c:\games\cosmo ,make a cosmogo.bat and save it in your games folder.contenue of the bat:

cd..
cd cosmo
cosmo1

Now another tricky to get your life easier:open dosbox.conf, scroll down t'ill you find [autoexec]

that's what you have to put in there:

[autoexec]
mount c c:/games
c:

save it,and from now one you only have to start dosbox ,your games folder will allways be mounted as your c: and your dosbox will startup with a c: prompt.

Yes? if you are so far,and you have start'd up dosbox at the c: prompt type:
dir<enter>
you should get (if everything is ok)a list of the contenue of the gamesfolder : kdreams dir and a keengo bat,and some more listings.
yes ?
type
keengo<enter>
and with a little bit luck your playing keendreams.

Happy
What have you mentioned about ' epistles ' and 'biblical' circles?
I am no cleriqual, but i have rais'd tree children (adults now and left home) and have teach'd them to use a pc,in the dos times,so i understand how difficult it is for a big fat windows baby to getting started.

Why don't you ask where you downloaded the game?

Anonymous wrote:

Apparently not, you did not type everything in right.

The basics:
If on XP:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5443
If on Vista:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10437

If you get an 'illegal command' it means you screwed up.
Or you did a wrong mount.
Or you are in a wrong directory.
Or you unarchived in a wrong way.
Or whatnot.

If you really want to get help: give more details.
1) OS? Dosbox version?
2) All your mount lines.
3) all you type to try to get the game running.

Did you have a .rar or .zip file?

Cause you need to extract those prior to having an exe file.
