Hi there!
I would like to play again Crusader: No Remorse, but I can't get it running - I have WinXP, P4, 512MB RAM....
Every time I try to run the file crusader.exe (or install.exe) - I get an error message like this:
Fatal error 286.3330: General protection fault detected.
PID=0001 TID=0001 SID=0001 etc.
etc.
etc.

I tried lot of things to get it work under WinXP, but I didn't manage to... Sad
If there's someone, who knows how to get it work on WinXP and fast machine - Please Help!!! Thanx

What I did was went to a site called www.Bootdisk.com. I downloaded the disk for XP and ran it like it says in the manuel for bootdisks. The dos program should tell you the new drive names before you get the prompt. Go to the S drive and type install. The install program will start. Now do everything but sound configuration(or it will freeze!!!) After that you'll be sent back to the command promt. Type in "CRUSADER" and the game will play but without sound. You probably won't be able to get back to windows, so just restart your computer.

Thanks Edgehead for your reply, the solution you have posted is OK, but the absence of sounds discomforted me (Crusader without sound is not so cool) so I was looking for another solution. Finally I got a program called Connectix Virtual PC (there is a trial version available on www.connectix.com). This program allows you running various Operating systems on the same computer in Windows(!!!) - you can run more than one OS at the same time and switch between them, you can run them in a window too - like another windows programs. Every ''Virtual PC'' you create comports like a PC with a corresponding OS (You can install everything - DOS, Windows 95,98,2000,XP, Linux, OS/2 etc.) And the sound works too!!!!!
I tested it with Syndicate Wars too - sound worked perfectly, only it ran a bit faster (but I think it could be solved with some slow-down program...)
So try it, if you want!!!

Kantor,

Did you have any problems with sound skipping? I can't seem to get the sound to work correctly under Connectix...

Thanks,

Actually sound in Crusader isn't so clear as I remember on my old 486, but it's not so bad. I notice slight sound skipping mostly on main menu, but when I start to play the game, the sound is enough OK to play it... I don't know if your problems with sound are so serious, that you can't play the game, but in my case I didn't mind the skipping. The advice I can give you to avoid worse sound skipping is not to run another programs on background....

I have the Connectix Virtual PC, apparently working, but when trying to install Crusader I get the following error message:

Exception 13
AX=996E BX=046E CX=0000 DX=996E SP=046C BP=0882 SI=99F8 DI=183E DS=0047 ES=0037 SS=0037 CS=010B IP=0001 Flags=0202 Error=0000

This is with PC DOS, so I guess this is a standard Crusader dos error message. Any ideas as to how to fix this error?

Hey Kantor, any help you can give me with getting Crusader to work with Connectix Virtual PC would be great. I keep getting the above error. I even made the autoexec.bat and config.sys listed in the game manual. Same thing... A Frikkin Cuccoan

To Tarpon! I'm sorry, that I didn't write before - I was on holidays:) Well the only help I can give you is writing you down my autoexec.bat & config.sys contents. I installed MS-DOS 6.22, maybe installing this version would help. Here is my config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
FILES=30
BUFFERS=20

DEVICE=C:\MSCDEX\cd1.SYS /D:tomato

REM DEVICE=C:\MSCDEX\CD1.sys /D:TOMATO /P:1f0,14
REM DEVICE=C:\MSCDEX\CD1.sys /D:TOMATO /P:170,15
REM DEVICE=C:\MSCDEX\CD1.sys /D:TOMATO /P:170,10
REM DEVICE=C:\MSCDEX\CD1.sys /D:TOMATO /P:1e8,12
REM DEVICE=C:\MSCDEX\CD1.sys /D:TOMATO /P:1e8,11
REM DEVICE=C:\MSCDEX\CD1.sys /D:TOMATO /P:168,10
REM DEVICE=C:\MSCDEX\CD1.sys /D:TOMATO /P:168,9

DEVICE=C:\CNTX\CDROM.SYS /D:IDECD001 /L:E
LASTDRIVE=Z

and autoexec.bat :

C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X
C:\MSCDEX\MSCDEX.EXE /D:tomato /L:D
C:\MOUSE\mouse.com
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\DOS;C:\VC;C:\DOS\SUP-DISC
SET TEMP=C:\TEMP
c:\cntx\fshare.exe
c:\cntx\idle.com

some of these lines will be useless for you, but I copied it everything...(just pick those, which you'll need)
And last thing - when installing Crusader, I used for my virtual PC 32MB of memory - maybe you've put too much memory...
Hope you'll manage to install and run it....

hey kantor I'm wondering if you could help me with my problem with crusader. I'm also using the virtual pc that you suggested and I installed the dos 6.22 os and I installed the game, but when I try to play the game and type crusader in the folder I installed it in I get a blank screen and nothing happens. Do I need to go into full screen mode or is there something that I need to do. Thx for the help in advance.

Full screen mode of Virtual PC is not necessary, I play it sometimes in a window... I have no idea what could cause your problem, maybe if there is a loading screen and then nothing, it could be an incorrect drive letter in crusader.cfg - Edit this file and check this line: cdletter=d (where d is the letter of your cd-rom, where the Crusader disc is inserted, so if your cd-rom is E, it should look like this: cdletter=e ) Thatīs the only thing, that occurs to me...
