Is that the point of the DOSGames community as you see it? I thought the point was trying to preserve the good old games in playable state.

Nope, that's just one point I'm trying to make, I have fun trying to get things to run that I didn't have time for back in the day. It's more of a lab for me then anything else.

Strictly speaking on DOS games, I too would go for a P-200/233 as a base DOS gaming rig. However, nothing says you couldn't also put together a Celeron/K6/K6-2 machine running a dual-boot with DOS/Win3.xx and say Win 95/98 Wink

There are issues with the above processors and DOS games. A Celeron is especially problematic (all these "Runtime Error 200" glitches, other games that refuse to run, etc), but even on a K6, there are some game compatibility issues that aren't present on a genuine Pentium. I know, because I run a K6 (K6-2 for that matter). Not to mention that for the games that do need slowdown, it's easier to slow down a 200MHz machine than a 400-500MHz machine.

On another note, you don't really need to dual-boot DOS and Win9x, because you can just use the DOS on Win9x - it's as good as DOS 6.22.

I guess in some instances is best to keep a few different machines lying around, that is if you have the space Wink

8088 and 8086 are fit for the trash because of lack of 1.44 MB floppy support (unless you already have lots of games on it).

286 and better is OK since many 286s are capable of using 1.44 MB floppies.

My IBM PS/2 Model 56 SX (386 SX/20) is an awesome DOS gaming machine (except for 3-D games).

However, 486DX is the general minimum since some DOS games require a math coprocessor.

486DX/25 is the best of both worlds, slow enough for old games, powerful enough for some newer games.

That's right - IF you have the space. That is another reason I don't understand the point of keeping machines as old as XT or AT - the space they occupy compared to what they contribute simply makes it not worth it.

I do have 5 PCs in my house now:

* P4 1.8GHZ Laptop with WinXP (the one I'm typing from) Congratulatory
* My main machine - P4 2.8GHZ with Win2K (might upgrade to 3GHZ today, and install WinXP) Celebratory
* AMD-K6 475MHZ with Win98 - I use it to play DOS games and some Windows games which work on it, and in general, since it works and can be very useful for stuff like Office work, Internet browsing, gaming - I didn't throw it away Shit-Eating Grin
* Pentium 200MHZ with DOS 6.22 - To play DOS games that don't work on the K6, and once I get the router I want, I'll be able to connect it to the K6 and play multiplayer DOOM and stuff like that. Malevolent
* Cyrix 6x86 133MHZ - My dad's PC, which he uses for his work, because he still prefers to use Windows 3.11. Amazed

So you see, if I tried to stick in another antique, my mom would probably kill me. Laughing

The old Computers are not garbage. Just becuse they are old, does not mean
that U though it away! ? Do you through away you'r granpa just becuse he is
old, no I don't think so. Some of the old computers can only run that old program
you dug out of the shed. For example if you have a 5 1/2 inch disk, good luck
playing it on that windows 95, for iit could easly crash you'r video card, if it was
A game with cga graghics, or even ega cold destroy that new video card, &
you noo what, you would not beable to use that computer any more, cuse it is
more likely to be an onboard video, sooo you'r left in the dark.
