What PCI soundcard would you use with regards to the best DOS compatibility. The more powerful the better of course (ideally a card that could also do 5.1 in Windows).

Try a Creative Labs brand card. Also read the box and see if it mentions DOS compatibility before you buy it (even if it doesn't say it, it still may be compatible with DOS). As well, since DOS compatibility is achieved through a Windows-based emulator for many cards, try running a DOS game in Windows and see if you get sound (if the game offers auto-detect sound card, use it).

If all else fails, you can get DOSBox, which provides sound translation (even plays PC Speaker through sound card). http://dosbox.sourceforge.net (Use DOSBox as a last resort though)

Better yet, try to get an older PCI sound card if you can. Maybe sound card makers are losing interest in maintaining DOS compatibility and may not provide it. For example, the Creative Labs AWE64D PCI sound card provided DOS sound (when DOS games are run in Windows) through a module called EMU8008 (or something like that).

DOS compatibility with PCI cards is always tricky. You may not get it to work even if the card technically provides that. Ideally, you would run DOS games on an older machine, one which has ISA slots and you'll be able to stick an ISA card in there to have DOS sound with no worries.

I want to boot FreeDos but am currently stuck with onboard sound.

Has anyone on these forums had any luck getting a relativley recent PCI card working in pure DOS?

I would rather not buy legacy hardware if I don't have to.

So far I have found Ms-DOS drivers for Audigy & SB Live & Others... Availavble on the following pages.

http://easymamecab.mameworld.net/html/snddosdr.htm

Unfortunately I own neither a SB Live or Audigy to test them, though I don't doubt they work.

They don't always work. I personally couldn't get my SBLive! to work in DOS, on my old K6. I remember something called "Non-Maskable Interrupt" which was mandatory for the DOS drivers to work, and not all boards had it. I don't know how it is with the current generation of boards, but it's worth the shot.
