Post subject: Cold CPUs |

Um, if I put a block of dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide, about -180 celsius, REAL COLD!) on top of a CPU, would I make it a LOT faster?
(I heard that cold CPUs are faster than room temperature ones.) |

| No, it wouldn't. Tou would freeze the chip and it wouldn't work at all. |

| Ye-ow! Dry ice is tooooo cold. Something around 40-50 degres would be the optimum if it could be maintained. There have been some good experiments below Zero, but in the home condensation would be the bugbear. One melt and you have an expensive scrap pile. |

cooling the CPU only allows it to run faster IF you overclock it. The cooling is just there to prevent the chip from burning up.

| Somewhat true, but some gains have been seen in the ultracool area without changing speeds. It's possible the effect had to do with more than the CPU (i.e.: was the whole computer cooled or were other chips supercooled as well as the CPU). I haven't read the technical data as deeply as I could've since I couldn't do it easily myself. Still, it's interesting thinking about getting near to a superconducting state. |

| Yeah, I created this topic after reading about the guy who mounted his motherboard in a fridge and claimed he got some extra speed. |
