DOS Games Discussion

I promise I've tried to look for this topic already having been posted to keep from creating a new topic, but I haven't seen any topic with general information about Windows ME... with that said, can someone direct me to some detailed instructions somewhere on the internet concerning running general DOS games in Windows ME? All I've found with search engines is some random articles that pretty much just say "tough luck". I have read that there is a way to run some games in a DOS shell (?) program or something (though I could be confusing different computer jargon in my head), but is there any way I can tell if a specific game will work before actually going through with downloading it?

START> PROGRAMS > MS-DOS Prompt.

or START > SHUT DOWN > Restart in dos mode > OK

or BOOTDISK

or FIND A DOS EMULATOR

or JUST RUN THE GAME IN WINDOWS, IT SOMETIMES RUN IT ITSELF

Whilst there are ways to persuade Windows ME to restart in DOS (just as Windows 95 and 98 do), since it is actually just a pretty GUI balanced on top of DOS, we'll leave that aside for the moment.

Install your DOS game.
Go to directory you installed it to and find the .exe or .bat file that runs the game.
Double-click it.
It may all just work then.
If it doesn't then right-click the .exe or .bat file and select "Create Shortcut".
Drag the shortcut to somewhere more useful like the desktop or Start Menu (if you want to).
Right-click the shortcut and select "Properties".
Select the "Memory" tab and experiment with the values here. You're trying to give the game the environment it wants so read the documentation. Does it require expanded memory (EMS)? Or does it require extended memory (XMS)? What conventional memory does it require? And so on.

Post again with the problem with any particular game if you still don't have any luck.

I run Me.

There are just some games it dosn't run.

Like. Death Rally. (error your computer doen't support real-mode).

I tend to use MS-DOS Virtual machine. It somtimes works.

Somtime this year I'm going to reformat, to 98 Second edtion....

As I say, Bobo, there are ways to get ME to restart in proper DOS. After all, just like Windows 95/98/SE, it is actually running on DOS. Look here-

Be careful, if you try this. Make sure you've got a Windows StartUp disk and keep copies of anything you're replacing so that you can always go back to how it was.

I bought a Are You Afraid of the Dark disk that says DOS and Windows and it still will not run in Windows ME which really torks me off. I searched and searched on Ebay until I found it, and it still won't work Any ideas to help me would PROFOUNDLY appreciated

Most of the people I know who jumped on WinME when it was first released, concluded that it sucked so unbelievably badly (even for Windows) that they went back to Win98SE and waited until WinXP was released to upgrade...

Some of the people I'm talking about were businesses.

WinME is a dog-and-a-half. My advice to you, is go back to Win98 or get WinXP.

There is a fix somewhere on the internet that you can get to run DOS from ME (I think I saw a site on Geocities). Don't get XP if you want to play Doom or Heretic/Hexen in Windows (unless you're happy with either PC-Speaker or no sound) unless you dual-boot with 9x/DOS. XP DOS is based on ME DOS but can't even play Duke Nukem! Avoid XP DOS for games.

win ME is so unbelievably awful, downgrade or upgrade or whatever, but just kill it and half your problems are solved...the other half are just stupid bugs present in any windows

I like ME. I ran it without ANY problem.
