Javelin looks pretty cool. D20 influenced CRPG roguelike-like. Nice.
If it weren't for the Java requirement, it'd already be installed! Still workable, just higher friction to find a good place to install it...

Edit: Got it installed and played for a few minutes with a random quickstart party. Very nice; easy to get started and lots of shows promise for fun. Feels very Indie, in the good way, not the bad.

Hey fellows! I'm really happy you enjoyed Javelin (enough to post it here and give it a try at least) so I just wanted to drop by and say hi!

The next version is really 99% ready to come out (I'm super lazy though and haven't worked on it for a while) and it's gonna be a big one, with mouse support and big changes on the strategic layer of the game. I've written about it here https://javelinrl.wordpress.com/2017/04/08/preview-of-javelins-1-7-districts/

I'll make sure to create a new thread here on the appropriate sub-forum once the release is out! If anyone is interested in helping test it before that though, feel free to send me a PM or email, every kind of help and feedback is very appreciated Shit-Eating Grin rock on!

Thanks, it's great to know there's an active DOS forum for gamers Shit-Eating Grin just the other day I was beating myself around trying to get C&C:RA running on DosBox... I was sure I had it going a while ago Sarcastic point being: I feel quite at home here already!

MrFlibble: you think Javelin is worthy of being featured in your glorious open-source games list? I sent you a message about it but you didn't reply so I'm thinking maybe you could have PM notifications turned off or something...

Yes, you are very welcome around here! Thanks for coming by and posting.

Nice work with Javelin, I'll look forward to the next version. I'm always impressed by people who've gotten their games into people's hands. I've started so many projects that go nowhere - kudos!

This guide might help setting up RA1 in DOSBox.

Spelunky also has an early version that you can play around with in the browser. It's not nearly as complete as the commercial version but you can surely have some fun around with it (and maybe buy the game if you like it enough)! It's more of a roguelite than a roguelike but it was pretty successful at that!

I just found a version of Rogue called MacRogue:

You can download it here, and it runs fine in Executor except it seems to crash upon exit.

Probably more of a historical interest than anything else I guess.

Cutest hobgoblin ever.
The original rogue had Mac and AtariST graphic releases, that was a surprise to me when I found out and saw them a few years ago. Cool that a mac fan updated it for their system!

A while ago I discovered a version of NetHack which uses isometric tiles and an optional custom GUI called NetHack 2000:

This version was actually developed in Japan based on JNetHack (here's the old official website from 2001), and I think it uses tiles created by a Japanese artist,Mitsuhiro Itakura. More recent releases of this NetHack variant added sound effects and limited animation.

I like this kind of art style, and Itakura's 32x32 tiles can be still used, albeit in top-down view, in modern versions of NetHack. However, the isometric tiles (some sources call it "cavalier perspective" IIRC) appear to be used only in certain variants of NetHack like GTK+ NetHack or glHack, as well as Slash'EM.

The Wayback Machine has preserved only one version of NetHack 2000, Alpha 0.2.0.0, which is built upon NetHack 3.2. There was a later release v0.3.1.1 (based on NetHack 3.3.1), as suggested by the archived page, but the binaries of the English version have not been preserved. Ali Harlow's website still has the source here, so this version could theoretically be re-built. There are also several Japanese versions found here, including later NetHack 2000+5 and NetHack 2000+8 builds, as well as another isometric tile set in a completely different art style (as shown here for example).

What makes me wonder is that this type of isometric tileset seems to be overlooked (at least, outside of Japan apparently) somehow, as I have found very scarce information about NetHack 2000 at non-Japanese websites with the exception of Ali Harlow's pages. AFAIK vanilla NetHack does not by default support isometric tiles, so there is no direct counterpart to these variants for people who do not know Japanese.
