I read all of the key points even at the very bottom of the description. All I can say is being a developertn I know how much funding is needed. So those who like the developertn or any other programmer's work would be appreciated. We developers work so hard to not only bring in a living but also to help others out. Not only do we take pride in our works but we also want others to receive quality for what they paid for.

Even though I am religious I am not a monk. I am far from a priest. I try hard to be a good person on the side of the law however I am only human and need a break since I am not a robot.

Although I talk about my two parents I have disappointed them many times in my life. So talking to kiss their butts does not bring me their sense of praise and a feeling of accomplishments.

Just because I talk well about my cousin does not mean I see him. In fact we shake hands once a year usually. Laughing

Cool, I didn't make the connection.

I just finished reading Dungeon Hacks: How NetHack, Angband, and Other Roguelikes Changed the Course of Video Games by David L. Craddock. Fun book! The Classic Rogue link was either in the book, or was linked by a webpage that I was researching some points in the book. Either way, lots of inspiring things in the book - amazing how many of these hugely impactful and long-lasting games were written (started) in high school and college.

I guess one of the reasons is that back then many people could only get regular access to computers in places like college or university. IIRC some games in other genres from late 60s to the 80s were also written by and played by college/university folks.

Caverns of Xaskazien

Originally for Dos 1995 but ported to a native Windows build in 2004.
I gave the Windows version a quick try, looks fun. Very "Borland BGI" interface. Those fonts! Happy

That's incredible.

I don't believe it, but it has to be for DOS personally.

Then again maybe it's my job to do the DOS Borland like such hehe

Yes, definitely. The Dev link even says "The original platform was DOS and it relies heavily on Borland libraries (Borland Graphics Interface = BGI)." They say they used SDL to port it to windows; very interesting.

It's also funny to occasionally run into an old windows program that uses the Borland OWL Windows libraries, which have very distinctive OK/Cancel buttons with icons.

Hmmm.

I've just been reading up on the latest Borland news this morning via Wiki.

According to Wiki, Borland Turbo Assembler is available in the C++ Builder.

I believe C++ Builder is more geared towards Windows RAD - rapid dev?

So, yeah, I guess Borland is doing Windows like such now a days too. hehe

Again, this one is familiar but I've never played it. For some reason, I thought it was similar in appearance to Quick Majik Adventure (which I have played a bit of the shareware version), but comparing the screenshots they don't look much alike.

I should say that while generally I believe ASCII graphics to be self-sufficient in roguelikes, I have a kind of a soft spot for Warlords style top down tiles, which can be found in quite a few roguelike games (e.g. 32x32 tileset for NetHack, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup etc.).

I think I vaguely remember those Happy I used to have some Borland kits when we had IT classes at school. I never got around to do anything with the Windows versions anyway. I did however use one of the the supplied tools to create several Windows desktop icons.

Cool, that upgrade project's a good idea. And it's got the icons I remember! But I'd forgotten about the diamond radio buttons. Heh.



Last night I setup and took a quick look at Zangband (text) and ZandbandTK (graphics). The package I've got has a few graphic choices that look decent, both a "text-like" graphic tileset, a "pretty pictures" tileset, and a "pretty pictures Isometric" style tileset option. I've liked the way things like Vulture's Eye (nethack isometric graphics) looks, though to actually play for any length of time I prefer text or square flat tiles.

Somewhat back on topic, quite a while ago I stumbled upon the first-person graphical roguelike called Delver. Back then they offered a free alpha off their site but it did not work for me for whatever reason. Other than that, I think the game has some very cute graphics.

Just read about a game called Witchcraft Adventure. It's not a "pure" roguelike but shares many elements with it while still throwing in some original ideas. A detailed review can be found here (you'll have to scroll down the page a bit).

Just to save fellow Christians and Jesus Christ followers:

According to The Holy Bible witch, sorcerers and such are the underworld.

Ghosts and such are evil according to my vague understanding.

When I was born I believe I was baptized into both Buddhist and Catholic.

However when I got older and chose for myself I became Jesus Christ like.

Anyways The Holy Bible is the book of laws for Jesus followers!

So I'm just giving my 2 cents opinion on the game.

Just found a very interesting project called Rogue Invader. Again, not a"pure" roguelike but includes elements like random procedurally generated levels. It has a pretty interesting plot/gameplay concept, and a very appealing art style.

NetHack 3.6.0 has been released recently. New stuff is listed in the release notes.

Wow, a NetHack release! It _is_ Christmas!

Last serious one with new features was Nethack 3.4.3, released in December 2003.

Looks like this one isn't so much new features but "refactor and modern computer update;" looking forward to new stuff now the team has completed their prep work and stability release!
