Well, I meant that if he continued doing it, he would get sued, so he had to immediatly stop it all. Also, many rom sites are down, there are just too many to stop. |

could somebody please explain to me:
why a game that nobody really wants to take credit for, and doesn't even mention on their site (LSL, for example, is NOT on Sierra's site) is illegal for free download, when the author wont get any money out of it anyway? You'd think they would allow it for ppl to download it for free so that people can sort of learn, and enjoy the history of videogames and the company ?
People are SOOOOOOOOO stupid
some ppl should be told off for stupid things like that. Abandonware should be allowed, especially since the word ABANDON is in it. If you find some ABANDONed money, it becomes yours, if you find an ABANDONed cat, you can have it, so WHY can't you have ABANDONed SoftWARE?
Thanks for the explaination

Here's an answer...
Who decides if it's "abandoned"?
If someone ran off with my wallet because he thought it was abandoned money, I'd be rather ticked.
People have found "abandoned" pets that they later discovered were just lost, when the owner showed up.
In other words, THEY don't think they've abandoned it just yet... and really, it IS up to them, they own it. If they had abandoned it, then they wouldn't make a fuss when you started passing it around, would they?
At any rate, it's part "We might want to use it again later", part copywrite protection, part slippery-slope (If we don't stop them taking old games, then how can we stop them taking new?) and part big-corporations being ornery. It's the principle of the thing; they made it, they own it, why should you get it for free? Annoying, and stupid on their part, IMHO, but whachagonnado?
Incidentally, check http://www.allowe.com/ to find out what's up with Larry. It seems that there are no plans to market Larry at this point, although that doesn't mean they won't try it again in the future...
Personally, I go by the "If they won't sell it to me, then I'll play it anyways" rule of thumb. It's probably just convience morality, but meh. |

| I agree w/wardrich on one of those though: There should always be a way to legally get software. I can't stand it when I want a game, and the only place I can find it is ebay. Ebay gives nothing to the publisher/developer anyway, and most people selling their stuff on ebay already made illegal copies of the game. I do understand why people hate it when, say, somebody puts Doom on an abandonware site, since that is available from iD's site. |
