Commander Keen black screen (Steam/Dosbox) [Win7]

Post by Guest »

Hey guys first post!
Anyways I was hoping someone could help me out here. I bough the CK collection off steam. It seems to have installed and run the game through Dosbox automatically. My problem is when I boot up any of the games my monitor just seems to go black. I know the game is running because I can ALT+ENTER and make the game a very small window and play that way, but I would obviously like to be able to play it fullscreen. If anyone could help me out here it would be greatly appreciated.

Also I do not know if this is helpful or not but I am running Win7 Pro and have an NVIDIA 9800gt.

Thanks!

You should ask for support on the steam forum.
You paid, you should get support.

Anyway,
Locate steam's dosbox config file (I have no idea where steam apps store it .... if steam uses standard dosbox settings it will be in dosbox 0.74 start menu-> options -> dosbox 0.74 options)

Look for [SDL] in dosbox config and:
-> 'fullscreen' and alter to 'false'
-> fullresolution=original
-> windowresolution=1024x768
-> output=ddraw
That will solve ya problem.

windowresolution=1024x768 can be anything that suits your personal taste. (Keep 4:3 ratio)

Also, this http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13511
gives basic dosbox settings for Win7.

Ok so this is what I am looking at (one for each game, they all seem the same):

Can you please show me exactly what to edit and to what values? I am not exactly sure what to do. You're help is greatly appreciated.

try those values:

Code: Select all

fullscreen=false
fulldouble=false
fullresolution=original
windowresolution=1024x768
output=ddraw
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal
mapperfile=mapper.txt
usescancodes=true
Don't forget to save on exit, and you need a dosbox restart, of course.
Those would give you a windowed dosbox with a 1024x768 size.
Valable 4:3 ratios are:
640x480
800x600
1024x768
1152x864
1280x960
1400x1050
1600x1200
..... etcetera
Test things till you get something that suits your personal taste ....

However, if that doesn't do it, as I said , you should ask@steam, I don't know if they altered anything else in dosbox's SDL ......
I can't try things out with steam apps, I ain't a fan of steam and thus avoid it .....
