Lately there has been an influx of pointless guest post spam on the forums. I still don't understand the point of it ... the most recent batch has been of the "Hi ur forum is cool kthxbai" type, which seems to serve no purpose other than to provide work for the admin/mods. IP bans and so on won't work because rarely will these posts use the same IP or name.

So I've been considering finally turning off guest posting on the two forums where it remains open ... please vote and add your comments here. Thanks!

I think guest posting should still be allowed.
You have a captcha set up don't you?

In other words:

What? Render us worthless? You want our clicky fingers to get fat? Sides, I never really liked compulsory registration. :(

If anything, you could install a better captcha since the one we've got one is really easy to scan if you think about it.

:blah: Nope.
I think you have no idea how many 'spamguest' new topics we have to trash every day.
Luckily we have a hidden '7 days autodelete trash' sub where we can move those topics by a simple click, THX to our resident Wormpy.
To give you an idea: last 7 days or so some 60+ topics were moved there.
And I don't count the many posts we simply delete on sight.

So: :blah: really not.

Maybe do all boards except finding old games, getting games to work. maybe you could also allow guests to see and post in Trash Heap therefore if its trash we can leave it there :P

Could just build a better captcha or improve on the one we've got. They're not that hard to make; I'm sure the one we've got could be improved easily enough.

Built one for my own site that so far hasn't been breeched even once, and it has been up and running for quite some time now, something near two years I think. And I get quite a number of bots visiting each day. For that matter.. I can't help but feel my ego being bumped up a notch or two whenever I think about it.. But nevermind that.. <.<

Anyhow! I'm for keeping Guest Posting in the exact same state that it is in currently. I've always believed that Guest Posting should be heavily limited for various reasons, but, as it stands, not everyone will want to register an account if they want to ask a few questions, and as tight as our little community may be, a majority of the traffic stills comes from non-members. In other words.. I say don't touch it.

However, improving the captcha would be a good idea. However, though it'll reduce the number of spammy posts made overall, I don't think it'll fix the entire problem. I reckon we need more than just that.. But honestly, I'm not entirely sure what else we could do.

Peeps, problem is not spambot related, it's the retards that creates a ton of hello and Nice to meet you posts/topics.

So forget that 'captcha' problem, there is no 'captcha' problem. Captcha works fine, we don't have a 'spambot' problem.
Again:The problem (as far as is) is guest posting related, not spambot related.
Capiche?

I thought the random 'hello' topics WERE spambots?

Fair enough.

Random "Hi!" posts can be annoying, but unfortunately, I can think of neither cure nor solution to stupidity, asshatery, lack of foresight and etcetera, so not much I could suggest for the problem at hand. I do, however, wish you all the best. :P
