Google Chrome

Post by Larry Laffer »

As you might [not] have noticed, Google decided to launch their own BETA(big surprise there) browser, baptized Google Chrome.

In regard to the way it is presented to us the [not so] ignorant folk, I honestly don't think Google ever messed up this bad. Most of the videos(YouTube nonetheless) on the features page are broken.

As for the actual browser, the GUI is quite visually pleasing, *cougheyecandycough*, you can move tabs around, even from window to window(in a way a bit different from, say, Firefox, since Chrome doesn't reload the tab upon window change) and the page area is quite large(But where the hell's my Home button?).

However, underneath all that there are quite a lot of things going on. And I mean a lot of processes/jobs. See, they decided that each tab(actually, each unique tab, testing showed that the following doesn't apply to duplicated or blank tabs) has its own job. As seen in their comic-book-kind-of-description, they consider that making a new job for each tab will potentially lower memory bloating. While that may be true to a certain extent, for the casual browser, it's only an increase in total memory usage(Firefox with the same[10] tabs open used 94.000K as opposed to Chrome's 150.000K).

Security-wise, there are ups and downs. Chrome does have a neat function(for the eh... let's avoid the term "internet noob"... for the casual browser) called an Incognito Mode. Sites you visit in that window don't show in the history, don't leave any cookies, etc. So you can view all your favorite porn sites without risking your mom find out or loosing your at-a-keystroke-away Hello Kitty Online site. Shame in their thrive to create an user-friendly browser, they forgot to add the "Disable Javascript" feature. Rickroll away, kids!(I actually tried to see how their multi-job/everyting-in-a-tab-stays-in-one-process-ready-to-be-killed system survives internetisseriousbusiness.com, but it seems the owner decided to take out the javascript)

Oh and their popup blocker isn't really my jug'o'beer, selecting WHICH one of the blocked popups is a pain, as well as closing them(see, they don't open per se, since they don't get a job, but they do have this lil bar in the lower side of the screen. Have fun pushing that X button!)

They also claim to have sandboxed every tab/job to prevent malware from infesting your beloved computer(ergo, email your grandmother all of your porn) however, I can't be arsed to install it in my own sandbox and test it.

I couldn't really decide on the erm... gears(?), which are supposed to be the Chrome fan-made addons, since they are kinda... missing. So yea.

Overall? Well, if you like eyecandy(or don't mind being an internet noob), and don't like Safari(read: you're not a macnut), this is the browser for you! Otherwise, stick to Firefox!

It's once again lots to do about not much.
Yet again another browser, and as you said, they don't excactly aim at the systems that are low on RAM, or have a minimal proc.
Problem will be more that others -(read IE and FF)- will implement some (most-all-and some extra)- of the features into their own, to keep their market share.
And we will end with a lot of bloatware on those to, it's already so that I wonder if I ever will update to FF3 .... or will I install a basic dosbrowser again?

Let me give a shout:

I WANNA A BROWSER TO BROWSE TEH INTEHNET NOT A COMPLETE 'SUIT' LOADED WITH LOADS OF CRAP THAT I DON'T NEED.

And knowing google, and what they keep stored in their cache servers allover the world, do you really believe that 'absolute' privacy/anonymity thing? Yeah, sure, whatever.

One day, Google will own the Internet. It is known.

Really, stuff like this bothers me. The entire appeal of Firefox for me was the simplicity, quickness, and the fact that it pretty much allows me to do what I want with it without "user friendly" options that end up slowing me down.

It's like that goddamn stupid dancing paperclip in some versions of MSOffice. Do I need a paperclip? No. Is there any reason why a paperclip should have eyes and tell me useless shit? No. But I get a stupid paperclip under the premise that "it looks cute" and "it'll make computer n00bs (read, people from the special needs class) feel more at home."

I use Word to write papers for school, not play with animated paper clips. I use a browser to navigate the internet, not... thingy. Typically, attempts to look "flashy" and "hip" like this always end in me being greatly inconvenienced.

It'll prolly be big with the Macnuts, though...

has Wally heard yet?

Oooh really? Well, good thing's easy to get around to.

Ah well, Chrome's long been uninstalled, not something you'd expect Google to make(by which I mean break).

My friend Pavan told me there was a neat ad for Google chrome on Youtube with a shocking ending!! :o

Here's another amazing Google Chrome ad on Youtube. Such a magical experience watching it. Like gazing into a childhood dream.

I used to hate Google but any company who can make ads like these can't be all bad :)

Using Chrome as we speak, actually. I quite like it. I'm running it on a system with only 512 MB of RAM and something like 2GHz processing power, and it runs more smoothly than anything else I've ever tried. Might be something else interferring if it's slow on your end. I don't know; I've heard a lot of people complaining about it being slow and laggy, but I've seriously never had issues with it, ever.

Wow... you have an inane ability to keep track of every single post made by a user and then accurately recall the information from history every time a post similar it is made.... you should work for Google

I hear they pay better than DGF not to mention the fringe benefits like spying on others
