Last year GameHippo.com was sold (see this thread) and today when I went to it I just get a generic "search engine" kinda page. I hadn't been to the site for awhile, anyone know if this is a recent change, or has it been like this for months and I just never noticed?

Either way, kinda sad that this site has apparently disappeared. I remember visiting it when it was freegames.org (I think). With DGO now not the same as it once was, it makes me more resolved to keep DG running!

7/14/2008 - Updated Information on GameHippo.com: Unfortunately www.gamehippo.com is no longer online. To date no reasons have been given for the demise of one of the great collections/listings of independent and freeware games. Check back from time to time for any updates. Yahoo Answers

Seems it's gone for good now.

I think Mr. Worm was trying to buy the domain name a couple weeks back, so there might be a GameHippo revival soon.

Yeah, I'm trying to buy the domain name...still waiting on the negotiations.

We're working on building a better site from the ground up.

It was the only place on the web where you could get the DOS version of Starcraft. Lost forever, now... Meh

Though a tad on the sad side, I honestly can't say I didn't see this coming - actually, I'm surprised that GameHippo lasted as long as it did and didn't go offline a long time ago. Eh, oh well, it happens.

Hey Wormy - if you successfully acquire the domain, so far as content is concerned, is there any possibility of rescuing any of the old database? It'd save a might amount of time if you didn't have to worry about rebuilding some 1000+ entries, not to mention to number of games that were unique to that database.

AFAIK GameHippo didn't host any of the games themselves, so the file (on the remote site) still might be available somewhere? The URL still could be obtainable through Archive.org or something ...

Maybe my post was a little too subtle. Reread it again keeping in mind who I'm replying to...
