Post subject: Mac for uni... |

|
I was wondering...
I'm on a budget (student)...but i'm pretty sure i'll be buying a mac soon for uni work. I'm doing a media production major and obviously, working on macs at the uni.
I was wondering what everyone would suggest? I was thinking something laptop...?
Any help would be great.

I need a mac though.
You aren't helping.
Budget means, "don't suggest top of the range because i know mac's are bastardly expensive."

I think I'm gonna leave you in the capable hands of our Wally.
I'm really too disgusted of what Mac has become lately.
It would probably help Wally if he would know what applications you will need to make your project.
Also keep in mind that plenty application results are usable cross-platform. |

http://www.apple.com/au/macbookpro/
For a decent mac, you're looking at $2899 for a BASIC model of the pro, probably going into the $3100/$3200 range if you want it to actually take less than 5 years to do anything. (ie, getting a better processor, that 2.6 is "up to", meaning it's NOT the basic model - which is more 1.8/2.0) But whatever Wally tells you, DON'T get an Air. You'll regret it for the rest of your life.
Or you could get a PC... my Dell Inspiron 1501, which has comparable stats to a basic Macbook Pro, cost me $780 after my school and work discounts. (was originally $1100ish) Admittedly, a Mac has better video editing software from the get go, but you can pirate buy excellent software for ~$300. |

I never saw this topic
I am going to suggest either an Powerbook G4 (not intel) or MacBook (Intel)
However it all depends on the programs you are going to use, you'd get the PowerBook G4 quite cheaply however its not going to be as fast as a MacBook.
If you need one for graphics intensive stuff then go for the Pro that Dogbreath suggested or the Powerbook G4. |

She's a Media Production major, of course it's going to be graphically intensive.
Have you ever edited a movie, Wally? Do you realize how long the process takes? A friend of mine and I filmed and produced a 33 minute movie over the course of 5 months in 2005. It took us and a professional editor we hired (with her parents money ) just under 50 hours to edit. The normal rate is about 2 hours of work for each minute of film. (Thunderdog has watched it, he can vouch for it's badassery)
Do you realize how much longer that takes on a computer that freezes for 10 seconds every time you try to copy/paste a selection of frames? Or move/overdub sound? Or integrate clips? And don't even get me started on colour enhancement/basic cinematography... obviously, without a competent computer, it's next to impossible.
IMO, Macs capable of decent performance are just too damn expensive for the average student.

Only because he begged emmzee for, like, a year and emmzee is too softhearted...
I sense some jealously on the part of dosraider, though. Does this mean a potential assassination attempt? Is this where Larry as been all this time? Swimming to Australia? The plot thickens... |

You get at least $200 off if you are a student and Apple also give you an iPod Nano.
Click your University

I have just been informed that Final Cut Pro does not work on a MacBook so you'll have to go MacBook Pro, that could replace your desktop PC quite easily.
However I'd like to see what Software you require and just so you know these computers last a long time
If your parent's run their own business couldn't they get it and write it off as a business expense?
What sort of budget are we looking at? |
