their stupidity and laziness astounds me. releasing an "updated" version of the Kings Quest collection to run on XP. BULL!!!!! they realeased the games with dosbox instead of doing the better and actually updating the games. im just really angry about this and i feel sorry for anyone who bought the set and still had the original KQ collection.

Shit-Eating Grin
Old 'news', but still funny.
They are greedy@sierra.
But they own the right of those games, so it's fully legal what they do.
They only 'forgot' to include some files with dosbox, but later they corrected that when the dosbox devs protested and included those.
You may include dosbox, but only with all files.

In fact they were pirating dosbox ..... Laughing

That's the way it must be done. 'Updatin'' graphics (or changin' to work in newer systems, not patches) is the wrong way. when there's a emulator there. They only neede to add text "These are the original releases. You will need the DOSBOX (link) emulator to play these games in Windows XP/Vista."

i know its old, but i recently found my old KG collection CDs and so i ran a search to find a way to play them on XP and i came across the newer collection and it just annoys me. they could have updated the programs to run on newer systems but still keep the old graphics quite easily. hell if i knew more about coding and crap i would be working on a way of running it properly (straight from XP and no toying around in dosbox)

No, you're wrong here.
You really need a dosbox like program on newer hardware. The sound can be worked around eventually -(a la ScumVM)-, but most newer monitors -(flatscreens!!!)- can't handle low res graph mode. That's not the same as low res text mode.
That's now the great advantage of dosbox, it provides a way to display those low res graphics on modern hardware.
That and some other thingies. Mainly to be able to run those games on a modern OS, they were never meant to. Or even on an OS as Linux/Mac.

fair enough but they couldve somehow integrated it into the program itself so that itll run in a window for newer hardware rather than just pack the game with dosbox

No again, sorry.
I know you mean well, but no, really not.
That would need a complete rehaul of the game, make it a windows game.

The dos cmd window itself in windows is far to much restricted for games as this, we're not talking about some QB game here.
The windows cmd is meant for system maintenance progs, not for gaming.
Even if there exist batch/QB games that run swell in a cmd window, that's far from games as we are talking about here.

Dosbox, or even VPC, yes.
You get the original look and feeling of those gems that way.

thats 1 and 3, i know that 1 and 3 had some form of remake to run on XP but what about the others, 2, 4 5 and 6. those articles indicate that the games were updated in graphics and all that to look like 5 and 6. but 1 and 3 run on XP. these remakes were not done by seirra. im stewing about the fact that if these "Anonymous game developers" took the time to create these game that are available for free why didnt sierra remake it themselves and they would at least get some money out of it

Point-click seems to be a dying genre.
Must be that Siera thought they wouldn't make enough money would they make remakes.

As a major part of the money making those days in the gaming sector is on the console side, it's a bit understandable. The greatest hits are on the FPS platform. And honestly, a Wii-PS3-Xbox isn't really suited for point-click gaming.
