When a file is deleted only the first bit (now yeah, kinda) is erased, the file itself remains on your HD t'll it is overwritten by another.

If you want to destroy a file so that it can't be recovered again you need so called DATA SHREDDERS, they overwrite ( X or 0 ) all the non-allocated space on the HD.

But, even then, some programs can recover them by reading the remaining magnetism.
That's why proffesional Data Shredders have an option to overwrite the deleted files 5-10 or even 20X to an extend they can't be recovered again.

So young people, don't think by simply deleting your darkest secrets your sins are erased.
Anyone who can work with a HEX editor can unveil them.

You may have nightmares now.

I've once had some form of data shredder(can't remember the name tho') on "Paranoid" setting(20X) it took it 15 minutes to overwrite 10 MBs Sarcastic

And let's not forget registry entries, peeps!

The fact that data is so hard to completely destroy can be an advantage, as well. If you accidentally delete something, then the file's still there for you to recover. This has actually helped me out a few times! But I really can do whatever I want on the computer and get away with it because no one else really knows much about it.

Hmmm. Few things to say here.

One: Data Recovery.
Simple in theory. I ever-so-cleverly "ctrl X / ctrl V'd" my personal files (including school-work) onto my new hard drive from an external device. Now of course, the original location was then empty. When my hard drive took a hard dive...i lost the contents of the folder (and...well everything.) SOOO...we did a data recovery on the device and i managed to get some of the stuff back. From the results i got...I'd bet that one delete and revival wouldn't retrieve many pornographic images. The ratio of text documents to photos/videos that were able to be retrieved was 100:1. So...let me know;
a.) If this is what normally happens when retrieving documents.
and
2.) Why this happens (if it does.)

Now...this may be a little beyond your current scope...but hang in with me. Here's a quick tutorial for never getting caught with pornography stored on your computer:
* Do not look at pornography on your computer.

It really isn't that difficult.
