Hi there. I'm kinda new to all this and haven't got a clue how it works.
I recently bought a 1994 access version of Under a killing moon. kinda just on the off chance it would work. I remember an old friend playing UAKM years ago on a windows 1995 (I think, might have been 1998...???) system. I now have a windows xp system and I know it has A form of dos, 16 bit I think, if that means anything to you. And even tho it installs ok I can't work out how to get the game going. Is there something that I need to be able to play these old games on xp? or is there another way that I can't see? I've had the same problem with 11th Hour.
Thankyou!

The problem is that the dos emulator that comes with xp is a piece of junk. An emulator is a program that pretends to be another program or system.
Dosbox is a dos emulator made by third party developers, and it works really well for me. I would strongly suggest also getting D-Fend, which is downloadable from the dosbox site. D-Fend will let you just double click an icon instead of opening dosbox and doing all the typing yourself every time you want to open a program.
Setting up a game to run the first time can be a bit confusing though. If you have questions, feel free to PM me. |

I prefer DOSBox over D-Fend. At least DOSBox has that old-school Dos mode interface...
Also no offence FP but well this is a DOS games forum and carrot can just ask questions here as well as you can answer them here, without the hush-hush factor
And did I not reply here before??? Odd! |

Vangar... virtual pc doesnt emulate an IRQ for the soundcard... thus pretty much all dos games wont have sound fx.
oddly enough i assume this is also the case with windows xp's dos emulation aswell... dunno why tho as i never tested. |

Wow. Got my head bitten off after one post. Great welcoming committee
Firstly, D-fend is just an addon. You are actually using dosbox. I just figured it would be easier to click an icon than to actually open dosbox, mount your cd-rom drive, and find the app file you want to run every time you want to play especially if your having trouble getting something to run correctly and have to restart it a few times.
Also, what "hush-hush factor?" I'm just trying to be helpful. I'm pretty sure it would be quicker to guide someone through installation with IM/MSNM/ICQ/whatever instead of posting here and waiting a day for a reply. I was just letting carrot know that I wouldn't mind being contacted in this manner without saying "HEY ANYONE WHO CARES TO KNOW, MY IM NAME IS 'I(HEART)SPAM!'"
Secondly (or third, depending on how you're counting,) I don't need, or want, a fully functional copy of win95 on my computer just so I can play a couple dos games. In addition to the sound problems mentioned above, from what I understand, you need a disk copy of win95 to get it to run. I happen to have a disk copy, but to me V-PC is just not worth the hassle.
Maybe I'm just biased against V-PC because I think that Microsoft should have built an at least half way decent dos emulator into WinXP or at the very least given you a place to download one free from the beginning but, they didn't. And you know why? Cause they wanted you to shell out the money to buy V-PC so they could make a few billion more. I know it's free now, but it wasn't for a long time. |

you dont need to install from floppy discs... the virtualized BIOS allows you to boot from the cd but if you only got the disks then |
