For starters : W95 and NT are completelydifferent OS.
Windows 95 -> dos based, close to the ultimate crap.
Windows 95 OSR2 -> same as W95 but a bit less crappy, with USB and FAT 32 support ,still not really good.
Depends of what NT you are talking.
NT 3.1 ->crap
NT 3.5 ->crap
NT 3.51 -> bit less crappy.
NT 4.0 -> pretty good, but not for home use, more office oriented.
NT 5 ( also known as W2000) same as NT 4.0 , but pretty stable .
NT 5.1 ( also known as Windows XP ) very stable OS, good , less flaws than the previous NT's.
NT 5.2 (also known as Windows Server 2003) same as XP but more office and professional oriented.
NT 6.0 (also known as longhorn) not oficialy released yet, but very promessing OS.
I suppose your question can be translated as :
I have an older PC, What OS should i install? Regarding the fact you ask about W95 it wouldn't be a powerfull pc, my choice would be W95 OSR2, but if possible W98SE. None of the earlier NT's are very good for home use.
And if that wasn't the meaning of your question, now than it was about something else............................

| Actually I have W95 OSR2 (also known as W95b) and its plain crap and wondering if NT 4.0 was any better. The reason I thought it might be a W95 copycat is because they use the same interface. But for know I'm going stick with what I have now. Reason? NT 4 doesn't have support for FAT32 and wasn't built on dos. |

| NT is more solid and reliable, and for some things it might even be faster and stronger. But it is a mighty gamble, and depending on what software/hardware you're running, the switch to NT 4 might be worse than keeping your 95 system. |

Windows NT = Complete Waste Of Time
* Old
* Nothing works on it
It's kinda like the original Grand Theft Auto compared to the sequels, if you know what I mean. The concept is great, but the implementation was lacking at times. Just like GTA2, GTA3 and others improved on GTA, Win2K and WinXP improved on WinNT, but the original itself isn't worth the trouble. |

It can handlle files larger than 4G.
Better and safer HD writing/ reading.
Better multitasking.
Good server features.
Doesn't hang so easely as '98
Reasonable system recovery
Is protecting itself more than '98 (even don't talk about '95 here !)
and so on.....
..................
..................
...............
....
The latter NT's (read as W2000 / XP's) are allover improved towards '98.
But are system resource consuming. |

I don't know if I really understand what you meant here Gamer_V.
You seems to state that PC only being developed because of games?
Industrial needs ? Maths ? Space ? Office ? Movies ? CAD/CAM ?..................
and yes big brother also.........
I can only hope i misunderstood what you wrote.

Your link didn't help that much, but thanks anyway. I've decided not to take chances and stick with W95b.
I have another problem too: I accesed dos to find out which version I have but it tells me Windows 95 4.00.1111 How can I get it to tell me the dos version number? |

That IS your dos version.
You can't have dos6.x on a fat32 system.
On win98SE you get with the ver command:
windows 98 version 4.10.2222
yep. |

Officialy you have :
Windows 95 4.00.1111
That is your dos version, the Disk Operating System your W95 need to run and operate.
To be honest I don't know what unofficial dos this is , can be dos ?? ( and I'm too lazy to look it up, maybe someone else ?)
Officialy on win98SE i have:
windows 98 version 4.10.2222
unofficialy known as dos 7.(FYI:your W95 won't operate on it !)
There is a freeware dos derivated from it known as:
dos7.10.(also with FAT32 support and some further development , not supported by MS).
hehe GameMaster.EXE, you have something with OS's , don't you ? |
