Guess what operating system I'm running this web browser on-

The screen grab was taken at 1024x768 and I've reduced it to half size out of consideration for forum users. This web browser is absolutely amazing! I'm only trying it now because up to now I had a Winmodem and therefore couldn't (clue...).

Cool

Whatever it is, I want it (if it's free).

I direct your attention to the lower-right-hand corner of the picture above. It says "Unregistered", therefore meaning; yes, it is free.

is it a windows that has been hacked (or "modified" if you will) with Litestep or Litestep pro? is it BEOS? Arachno?

It looks 1337 whatever it is!

Must be a form of linux (since winmodems use proprietary code and linux users cant make drivers for it)

Is it a form of QNX or something?

Yep. That's right. It's MS-DOS 6.22.

The browser's called Arachne and it's free for personal use from here-
http://arachne.browser.org/

Note that although it has a connection wizard to get you online you will need to know your ISP's DNS numbers (phone and ask them if you don't know) as well as the usual stuff (username, password, phone number, blah, blah).

Also note that this program will only work in DOS proper. It will not work in a DOS window. It works "under" Windows 95/98 only if you exit to full DOS mode. It also likes plenty of free conventional memory. Type "mem" at the prompt and look at the value for "Largest Executable Program Size". You need at least 610K (preferably more).

It's not hard, people. But you've got to be prepared to tweak a bit.

I have it set up to run at 1024x768 with an 85Hz refresh rate. I've got the mouse wheel working for scrolling using CuteMouse 2. And Arachne is amazingly fast and stable because I'm running it from a ramdisk. When I first installed it I didn't have disk cacheing or a ramdisk and it was slow as treacle. Now it's nearly as fast as IE and I've still got some tweaking to do.

It's a dream for old DOS nerds like me... Cool
