I'm going through some old shareware CDs (currently 1000 Game for Windows on cd.textfiles.com) and came across a few games that appear to be gems worth knowing about amids the tetris clones, card games, and other forgettable items.

Entombed

Originally released in 1994 on Win 3.1, this adventure game has ray traced graphics and seems to be a sort of "Australian Myst" from what I can discover.

Originally released in 1994 on Win 3.x

In 1997 it was reworked and rereleased on Win 9x as Entombed Enhanced

ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE announcement, for release in October, 1994

Entombed is the latest game designed and created by Chaos Concepts, a
new player in the entertainment software arena. Entombed boasts 640 x 480
hi-res game interface, breath taking ray traced graphics, digital audio
and five intricate levels.

This is the ULTIMATE PUZZLE ADVENTURE where you play the role of an
archaeologist who becomes trapped in an ancient tomb. Alone you must
navigate your way through deadly traps, intricate puzzles and
involved mazes, as you try to escape from this harsh captor, before
it claims another victim.

Deciphering information from the hieroglyphic inscriptions, you will
discover that the previous civilization was highly advanced, maybe
your not in a tomb after all, but a structure of more clandestine
intentions. You also discover the remains of others have been here
before you - Grave robbers? Fortunately you find the diary of another
explorer who also became trapped in the tomb, many years ago, it
proves to be invaluable in your quest to survive. So what did become
of the race that created this vast underground metropolis, and what
is its purpose? Communication with another realm? Time travel?

Prepare yourself for a new dimension in entertainment and design,
when you enter Entombed!

Or, download ENTOMBED Enhanced from Beaucomm Interactive's website (in three languages): ent21eng.zip, ent21frn.zip, ent21ger.zip

Cool, though to be clear that's the Entombed Enhanced Win 95 Shareware/Demo version.

I was thinking you had tracked down a freeware release; too bad. Blissful

I did not know there was a freeware release. I never played the game, I just know it from the Wayback Machine copy of Beaucomm Interactive's website, which I dug for the shareware version of Operation Carnage.
