90s mech/robot FPS [Iron Assault]

Post by HRZ »

Dear friends,

My name is Alex, I'm 25 years old from Moscow, Russia.
For some time I've been searching for a game, but yet had no chance to find it. But I've tried a lot, since I was into it back then.

That's the game I played when I was 5-6 year old, so I believe it was published no later than 95/96, although keeping in mind the graphics (and the lag Russia had in IT development those days) 93/94 seems more likely to be true.

So, some description:
Windows platform (I believe it was win'95)
FPS game, you sit in the mech cabin, see it's elements on the screen
First level is some kind of city, robots are about 1/2 of a building tall
First level enemy is two or three mechs that actually look like a frog or smth
It's pseudo 3d (smth like doom 1/2)
In the beginning, you can only choose between 2 mechs
Mechs are delivered to mission by plane

Sorry, all I remember for now. Would be EXTREMELY grateful for any variants.

PS: I saw a similar thread here:
http://dosgames.com/forum/post-83160.html
Description is very similar. My game looks a lot like Radix, Metaltech and Ultrabots :(

Update: looks very similar to Earthsiege...but is not :(

Iron Assault?

Or the MechWarrior series; started in '89?

Here's a list of these types of games, but I can't get it to sort by date or OS:

You could try asking at the Old Games RU forums, there are lots of knowledgeable people out there who may help.

G-Nome?

I was able to narrow down MobyGames lists to FPS Battlemech games on Dos & Windows, in case you didn't go through the big list earlier:
Dos FPS BattleMech
Windows FPS BattleMech

Of course MobyGames might not have it, or not have it classified as a BattleMech game - or maybe it's really a tank game vs. BattleMechs? I saw the name Krazy Ivan on the list and thought we were there! You might try googling for "games like X" where X is Iron Assault or MechWarrior or EarthSiege.

There's also the Google Image Search trick where you look for familiar looking screenshots doing searches like screenshot Mech games 1995 or "games like X" as above.

Hey, thank you so much. You are the real game master!

Actually, I've now thinking that it's Iron Assault.
I've just thought I'd recognize the game the moment I see it, which didn't happen with IA.
Now, the more I look at IA the more it looks like my game.

Will try to install it soon to check the hypothesis.

Sweet! I hope it's fun either way, but hopefully you'll know if you've found it. :) Good luck.

Hey mate,

You are the real maestro. I'm now into 5th mission in Iron Assault and it's really the game I've searched so long.

Don't think I would play it more than a day or couple, but you know the feeling...

Thanks!
