FastCrawl: A Dungeon Adventure in 30 minutes RPG from 2006

Post by Quadko »

I stumbled across a game on my harddrive I haven't played in a few years, FastCrawl: A Dungeon Adventure in 30 minutes! It's a quick random fantasy dungeon game for coffee breaks and other fun. It was an independent game, distributed via website, written by Glen Pawley. (Main site seems to be lost, but archive.org has a saved copy: PawleyScape.com FastCrawl link.

Nice art, well put together, turn-based, great playstyle, aimed at more casual RPG audiences. It's not really a roguelike, because you don't wander square by square in tactical fights through a dungeon. It's more a roguelike-like, because you quest to the bottom of a dungeon for a random McGuffin, traipsing your randomly selected party through hallways. It ends up playing a bit like a boardgame, and you always know which step will get you into a fight, though not what the fight will be. As usual: find loot, keys, monsters, locked doors, and stairways down!

It's too bad there aren't more games like this. And half the time I remember the game, I forget what it was called: QuickCrawl, QuickDungeon, lots of wrong alternates I've come up with. Bad memory, no cookie! :)

Demo and Buy link available various places, including:

Wish it was on Gog.com or Steam, it well deserves it!

(edit: fix grammar that was killing me to much to forgive and forget)

Well, my skills are pretty basic right now programming games.

So no luck being able to make one of the game you mentioned.

However, that's why there are other programmers out there.

Some specializes in Visual Basic, CAD/CAM, 3D, and such.

Just like each person specializes in an occupation.

For instance a person could be a little good at everything.

Or a person could be The King of That Occupation.

It depends how much time you devote.

Just like in a game with various strengths.

Your total can only add up to one hundred percent.

So if you use 90% up for being a landscape, you only have 10% for cooking.

So if you program 50% in C#, then you only have 50% in say ASM.

So really I have 58+ more years to go if I am bless by God!

If I spend 10% of that time talking...

Then 90% I can devote to something else.

For example, mowing the lawn, trimming, programming, etc.

I blame God for giving me two wonderful and good person for a parents.

My real dad is Nguyen Binh Thuy, and my real mom Huong Thi Vu.

Thank you mom and dad for teaching me to be a wise son.

Jesus!

Well if I do make a Dungeon type game I will have to work out the 3D renderring. I have only done a maze generator once and that was back in the Commodore 64 era. So I will have to figure out the routine if I still remember it from the magazine? Knowing me I like to try my hands on doing it myself deal.

Give me a week and I will see what I can come up with INTRO wize; 1 level.

Thank you Jesus Christ.

God bless you for blessing my real mom Huong Thi Vu#!!

Honours to my real dad Nguyen Binh Thuy for being an engineer helicopter pilot.

Honours to my real mom Huong Thi Vu for being the PRO cook that makes even spoiled food tasty!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love to my real two sisters who are hard workers and do not have to go through tough times.

Nguyen Khoa Thi, and Nguyen Khoa Thuyen are my two real sisters.

If you are not a member of my family then you know what The Holy Bible says + it is too bad that you are also valuable that is why God sent Jesus!

Jesus Christ!

Please note it may take time.

I'm working on "Time1973" right now.

So I don't know how much more time I'm spending on that.

I remember finding FastCrawl a while ago when I was searching for roguelikes with graphical tiles. The official site was offline by then. However there was something about that game that just didn't make me interested enough to check it out. I'm not sure what that was though.

I find it fun but not addictive, but you can't (that I've found, at least) control your character creation - number, name, and details are all randomly generated. It makes it much harder to identify with them and care what happens to them. That's my first guess.

Worth a look, especially if you're in a roguelike "but stop using all my time to cross a room or walk a hallway" mood.

OTOH, I feel about like you said regarding Desktop Dungeons. I should love it, but in spite of trying, I still have a meh reaction to it. Fun novelty, but didn't grab me.

@Quadko:

Yes, you're right. Dungeons like such aren't really that appealling.

So I guess back to the drawing boards.

Remember back in the days?

There would be moments of just all talk about programming.

These days I've lost it somehow and trying to get back to that.

I guess I'm getting too far ahead of myself with the help I've got.

Got to go back and stick to my roots.
