S&F Prod.
A neat site about oldies, with various interesting and useful info about classic games (an, in some cases, utilities like game data extractors).

MicroProse FTP Archive at GameFront
This is an archived copy of the official MicroProse FTP. Playable game demos, previews, patches and related files can be found here. The descriptions are rather scarce, insufficient and sometimes misleading though, so in some cases you might not known what you've got before you actually downloaded an item.

Westwood Studios FTP Archive
An enhanced version of the Westwood FTP, with some extra content thrown in, by Nyerguds, a well-known C&C enthusiast and author of the unofficial C&C v1.06 patch.

These links are unfortunately no longer active and have been removed from the list.

The MicroProse FTP copy can be found via the Wayback Machine:
http://web.archive.org/web/19980222073538/http://www.microprose.com/ftp/

However, not all files are available - hopefully this is fixed sometime in the future.

Yay, thankies! Shit-Eating Grin I've updated the OP as well with the most recent version of the list (divided into categories for a somewhat handier presentation).

Your mileage may vary, but personally I find Mecha-Neko's game reviews at Super Adventures in Gaming quite entertaining to read Happy

Here's a functional Westwood Studios FTP mirror (since their official FTP goes down frequently thanks to EA's tinkering or whatever):
http://downloads.silverbulletservers.com/C&C/Westwood_FTP/

BTW, that site also has downloads of freeware C&C games:

Here's a couple more FTP sites with demo downloads, the first one (Polish) is pretty extensive:
ftp://ftp.tpnet.pl/pub/games/
ftp://ftp.gameaholic.com/pub/

[Edit] And another one:
ftp://ftp.farlep.net/pub/clubix/demo/
ftp://ftp.farlep.net/pub/clubix/demo2/
ftp://ftp.farlep.net/pub/clubix/demo3/

[Edit 2] One more to the list:
ftp://ftp.peliplaneetta.net/pelidemot/3d-raiskinta-toiminta/

Hmmmm .... some interesting stuffs up on those.
Latest half-life updates, 'Aces over whatever' updates, and so on .... game tools ..... etcetera .....

But hell, you need to dig deep in those ftp things to find the really interesting stuff. Sad

There is talk about FilePlanet getting closed down, so I've started looking for alternatives Happy (I've been getting quite a few demo files 'n' stuff off FP lately). Most of what I've posted above I've found using FTP search engines - either independently or their results popped up in Google.

Some time ago I discovered FileWatcher.com but after successfully finding some rare stuff with it it started to give error messages, and is generally not functional now. Mamont FTP Index is pretty neat, and others that prove useful from time to time are Global FTP Search (I hate it though when it returns 0 results with a message, "We have found NOTHING.") and FileSearching.com.

There's a neat Italian site with lots of interesting (and sometimes rare) demos, but it's tough to browse because there is no easily accessible directory listing (or I haven't figured out how to get to it), and all the download links have to be edited manually to point to the site itself, because they point to a currently non-existing affiliate FTP. Directories of interest include:
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/msdos/games/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/msdos/games/arcade/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/msdos/games/demos/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win3xx/games/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win95/games/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win95/games/arcade/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win95/games/demos/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win95/games/rpg/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win95/games/strategy/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win98/games/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win98/games/arcade/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win98/games/demos/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win98/games/rpg/
http://volftp.tiscali.it/pub/pc/windows/win98/games/strategy/

Just remember, to download anything, copy the download link and change "ftp://ftp.volftp.mondadori.com/" to "http://volftp.tiscali.it/"

[Edit] Uh, forgot to mention that the links above will only work if you copy-paste them in your browser manually. That site seems to have been poorly maintained lately, but it's worth a visit.

Chex Quest 3 - ZDoom engine [ FPS ]
Quote:

10 years since the incomplete Chex Quest 3 beta was released on Digital Café’s website, Charles Jacobi (the original Chex Quest artist) has finally finished off this epic FPS trilogy! Chex Quest, a total conversion of Doom, was the first video game to be released in a cereal box, and garnered a relatively large cult following.
