Has anyone been able to get Dune II to work under Windows XP properly?
I can get the game to run, but the problem is that my keyboard seems not to want to work (nor the music; voices work fine, just not the music).
I have a Microsoft Natural Pro (PS/2).
Anyone know of this or a solution?
Thanks. |

hi i see no one has responded yet so i will. i forgot i got this game via an auction on ebay about a year ago. I will install it and give it a try.
One thing i need to ask. Did you try booting to dos on startup with a floppy disk? try it in dos. yes your computer even though it has xp can still get to dos with some effort. in dos you shouldn't have any problems. well i know of one. I could never get around the not enough memmory thing that pops up for this game when you try to load it. I think it's because newer boards don't have enough onboard cache set asside anymore for dos since microsoft doesn't use dos anymore for the most part. i even tried tricking the pc to kick the onboard ram or cache into hi mem mode i think it was and nothing. well try it in dos, i will also install the game and try it in dos since i'm running xp pro. if i get it to work i'll post back later tonight. |

| p.s. i forgot to mention to anyone reading. i'm looking for a patch to this game and a trainer. i used to have a trainer that worked great and could give inf spice, max power, and i think there was something else oh yeah i could control the computer's players. That was fun. i doubt i can find that trainer again. maybe i've got it on a diskette in my locked box of old dos floppies i have but i've got about 200 disks in there and going through them will take some time. if anyone knows of any trainers please post a link or email me at grimlock16@hotmail.com |

| i forgot i am running xp on ntfs disks. i can't look at them in dos. oh the humanity. why did i upgrade to ntfs! why! sorry... i tried but when i got to msdos i found out i can't access my c drive because well it's ntfs. i guess. although somehow i did get to my dos and was able to recover a missing file in dos. hmm. there must be a way. i think i used the xp recovery method before to get to the dos that would allow me to alter my ntfs disks but i am not totally sure if it was or not. i guess i must try to use it. |

| darn it all. i can't believe it. i did get to dos by logging in as admin on a safe mode startup with command prompt and i got the game to load and install except when i started none of the keyboard keys would work or the mouse. i can't remember if there is a movie file they play and force you to watch on the initial instal before choosing a house or not. after it showed the three houses a white box showed up wehre i think i was supposed to select which house and froze. i did a hard restart. i can't believe this crap didn't even work. I can't even use my sound blasters to listen to it. it doesn't like them i guess. if it ever runs i will have to just use the pc speaker. how primitive but still it's something. darn it all. My advice to myself. get a 486 for $80 and play till your hearts content. I'd get a 486 notebook myself so i could play dos games while at college. they aren't great for anything else. i would barely be able to visit the interent if there is a slot to plug in a wireless lan card. |

| A seperate machine for dos is advisable, unless you like having your hair go white early and wasting alot of your time. |

yeah i'vebeen looking around for a 486 notebook or like a 75-100mhz notebook but many don't have any drives and some only have 100mb hard drives. sad...
What i'd like to find is like 32MB of ram 1gb hdd, floppy, cdrom, and a slot to put in a wireless lan card so i can go online at my college. well i guess really i'd like maybe a usb port and maybe 1.5gb hdd so i can download small things while i'm at my college, or use the usb port to plug in like a usb hdd and save things to that. heck... as long as i can get online and have at least i gig i won't care because i can play my games on it. |

USB ports didnt come out untill the pentium II era on laptops , and the wireless lan equipment probably only works on windows 98 or better.
A 486 laptop isnt going to have what you want.

something like that is what you want, and is quite a bit more expensive then a 486 laptop |

well i'll just have to get a decent laptop with a dvd drive and without an os and put in 98se on it then. at least i know on 98se i can still get to dos easily lol. i saw the price of 300 andi guess i will just have to get a newer laptop just without the os. I've got a disk of 98se here and can just install it myself. i think the only thing i would use a newer laptop's usb would be just to connect it to my desktop at home and transfer any data i need to it. yeah they got usb cables you can plug into your laptop to transfer data to your home pc now. wow what will they think of next. i think it was $15 when i saw it at a local pc shop. i don't have a notebook so i didn't buy it. i will need a serial port at least on it. i think laptops still come with them. I've also got a couple mice here i could use with the laptop too... wait i'm really off topic here... |

Is your dune 2 the original boxed version of 4 floppies with manual?
I loved that game since it first came out (I got the 4 floppy internet release if you know what I mean). IF I can find the original I will buy it. |

my copy is an offical cd of dune 2 yeah they made a cd of it. Made by westwood not some burned copy it's a real copy of it. it says msdos version mw 12-004-112. it's got the legal text on it and has on the cd a pic of a trooper standing in front of 2 windtraps and behind the second windtrap it appears to be under attack because there is an explosion next to it.
it also says copyright 1984 dino de laurentis corp, 1992 westwood studios. |
