easily enough, run that, open curse.zip (or whatever), select all the files, click "unzip" and enter c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\curse | This win-rar is better than dosbox? |

Alright guys, let's not confuse the bloke any further.
Okay, the 32 bit or 64 bit are different versions of the program(which is made to archive files or extract them from said archives) made to run on different versions of windows. Download the 32 bit version, and install it(simply running the downloaded executable should lead you through a very straightforward install process.
Now, open the game archive that you've downloaded from hotu, and do as Dogbreath said: select all files, click "Extract to"(newest version might have a different name for this button, but shouldn't be much different), in the window that pops up, enter the path( c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\curse ) and hit Ok.
After you've done all this, run DOSBox, and the
cd curse
start
commands should work fine. |

That means you either didn't mount properly, or extracted to the wrong folder. In c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\curse you should only have a bunch of various files, with a start.exe among them. |

| Still had the same problem over and over again. still saying start is an illegal command. I checked and rechecked the files and there was a start in each file. |

Crucible, If dosbox starts up with a C: ready, now that's OK, first step is taken, time to get on to the next one and get that bloody game running.

In Windows:
Click on 'my computer'
Go to your c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\curse\
Look what files are in there.
Should look as :
See that \curse\ folder ?
See all the files in it ?
See that 'start.exe' ?
Ignorel the rest of the folders in my \games\ folder .... only the \curse\ folder counts here.
My advise to you is:
Delete everything that's in your \oldgames\ folder and start over from scratch.
Eventually re-download version 1.1 of the game from HotU (so that we are talking about the same thing here ...)
Also:

Apparently somewhere on the way you tried to run it directly in Vista, that's plain wrong, never do that. The game writes a cfg file, so your paths in that cfg file are probably screwed up now.
Highly advisable:
DELETE the \curse\ folder and everything that's in your c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\ folder
-> Start over from scratch.
And be sure to unzip your game in
c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\curse\ >>plenty files here<< |

Ah well, forget everything, simply delete what you have in \oldgames\, forget setting up dosbox, forget your mounts and sorrows to play this game.
Had some free time, and I begin to see that dos, dosbox, paths, whatevers ... aren't for you, can happen, some people never get to understand it.
You will have your qualities as human being, but dos isn't part of your skills.
But as you seem to really want to play this game; this is what you do:
Download this zipped file:
curse.zip - 2.33MB
And now read carefully and apply what I tell you:
Be sure to have deleted the old \curse\ folder and:
Unzip the FOLDER that's in the zip, to know: \curse\ in your
c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\ so that you end up with:
c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\curse\
Once again, in the zip file there is a folder named curse,
you must unzip the folder into c:\users\Khiezer\ oldgames\
not the seperate files in the folder, the FOLDER itself.
OK?
Now you open that c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\curse\ folder and double click on dosbox.exe, that will automount the needed virtual C: do a cd to where it must be and run the game.
Do NOT run your dosbox from the desktop shortcut, but the dosbox.exe in the new unzipped c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\curse\ folder.
If asked for a password simply hit Q and enter.
It works, is tested on my XP and Vista compys.
You can save, load, whatever.
Of course, I based the stuff and dosbox set up on your provided info, to know that there is effectively a c:\users\Khiezer\oldgames\, if not, you're screwed.
***For all the others: It is set up to work on Crucible's PC, needless to try this on your PC, won't work.
Or you will have to edit the dosbox conf file in the \curse\ folder ..... |

Just to see if I had any problems, I downloaded curse of the azure bonds (the hotud one) and ran it... took me about 2 minutes to get running. (had to edit the curse.cfg file to get it to save my characters properly)
Needless to say if dosraiders file doesn't work for you... I don't know what to say. |

A quick question. Do I need a controller of some sort. Not even sure if my CPU takes one. Can you use the keyboard or something? |

| Keyboard works fine. Remember, you use 7 and 9 to navigate the menus up and down. (this is so you can use 8,4,2,6 to move and still navigate through characters without switching the display like other RPGs of the time) Glad it works! |

.... Funny, yep. | Seriously. Game works great btw. It means a lot to me. I bought it when I was 14. 20yrs ago and never got further than character creation. My disks came corrupted and the store that I bought it from (the PX in Berlin, Germany...Dad was US Army) would not take it back. For 20yrs I have dreamt of playing and I just spent the past 3 hours making characters and getting to the royal guard scene, Never even knew what the game was about! That you guys and see you all when I'm ready for Secret, Darkness, Champions, Death Knights, and Dark Queen...
Thanks again. |
