I'm trying to get KKND Crossfire to run with DOSBox using Windows Vista HP.

I followed dosraider's guide at
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10437

When everything was done, i typed:
cd temp
install

to start the install procedure.
This is the error i recieve:

Other information:
The original cd broke many years ago and i managed to get a hold of a kknd.iso from a torrent website.

Since I could not run it with Vista because of compability/support errors i found out that it should be possible with DOSBox. I extracted the content from the iso file into a temp file created by following the guide, then attempt to execute the install file through DOSBox and thats where I ran into this problem.

Any help is appriciated!

Wait a minute ..... did you extract the files from the ISO?
Wrong. Completely wrong.
You must use the ISO as ONE BIG FILE.
So basicly:
Delete what's in your TEMP dir, it's useless anyway.
You must save the ISO as :
c:\users\sibbe\dosgames\isos\kknd.iso

Run dosbox and your inputs are:
mount c c:\users\sibbe\dosgames
imgmount d c:\users\sibbe\dosgames\isos\kknd.iso -t iso
d:
install

NEVER extract the files from the ISO

BTW: only the first KKND is dos, KKND2 and KKND Xtreme are Wingames, as far as I know.

And don't forget to do an Avir run on the ISO before using it.

Wow. You must be a genious. I have noticed you helped alot of people and you earn a great thanks. Im really happy that you replied, kinda wish you could see the smile on my face when the installation procedure started! Laughing

Well, the reason i extracted the ISO file was because at the end of your tutorial i needed to type install in DOSBox but i had no install file, so I figured if i extract all the files from the ISO i will recieve an install file to start the installation.

But everything works now.

I never forget to run an anitivirus check Wink Any way to make the Displayscreen fullscreen? Im using a 1680x1050 resolution if the information is needed.

To make your life easier:
Start notepad, input:
imgmount d c:\users\sibbe\dosgames\isos\kknd.iso -t iso
Save as
c:\users\sibbe\dosgames\kkndcd.bat
-> check the name whilst in win, sometimes it will be saved as kkndcd.bat.txt, won't work.

Run dosbox with your C mounted, input
kkndcd -(still on C:)-
and your ISO will be mounted automatically.

Enjoy the game.

Im not sure I understand what you mean with:
Run dosbox with your C mounted

I run dosbox but how do I know if C is mounted? And how do I mount it?

(To be honest with you, I dont even know what mount means, I just do as you say and go with the flow.)

Shit-Eating Grin
Look @your first post.
you'll see the prompt in dosbox changing from Z:\> to C:\>
That's a C: mounted.
Dosbox sees c:\users\sibbe\dosgames\ as virtual C:
That's the C: root for dosbox.
When dosbox reads/write to his virtual C: , windows takes over and reads/write in fact in on c:\users\sibbe\dosgames\

Dosbox can only read/write on a mounted folder, that's why I said Run dosbox with your C mounted , that's the only way dosbox can find and execute kkndcd.bat.
As you didn't wrote that you used the automount as explained in the howto, I added that 'C mounted'.

Also your last posts means that you followed the howto to the letter.
Kinda pleases me that it works, even if you obviously had no idea what you did.

Now yeah, nevermind, plenty blabla, it works, and you'll learn bit by bit.
You already know the basic routine to get games running in dosbox. That's what matters.
Happy

Well, I have never used DOSBox before and I'm not familiar with commands, and how to use them properly. But I do know how to follow instructions Wink

Thanks alot for your help, the game is working great. And it runs good in fullscreen with Alt + enter. Sound works great and there is no problem with "the game runs too fast" as I see some people have problems with.

The only thing that doesent work correct is whenever a building is destroyed, it creates an explosion, and every frame used to create the explosion passes by really slow. I would say 1 frame per second.

Normally a building would explode in perhaps 2 seconds, but I can see every indivudual frame pass by and it takes about 9 seconds for a building to explode.

This only happends when I see the building explode. If i scroll away to another part of the map, the game wont lag up. Not a major problem, but you might have a guess?

Thanks alot anyhow for all the help, you've been great and you deserve a big thanks.

How did you configure the soundsettings?
Did you used autodetect or did you choose SoundblasterPro?

Also: dosbox should be the only prog running, it's a pretty heavy prog and needs all the ressources it can get.

Double click on dosbox.conf, and check if
under header CPU:

[CPU]
core=auto
cycles=auto

and under header SDL:

[SDL]
output=surface

Or set
output=overlay
or set
output=ddraw
One of those 3 settings will give you the best result depending your hardware, test them out.

Ignore all the #things, those are not executed.

Whilst dosbox is running you can change game speed with
CTRL+F11 to slow down or
CTRL+F12 to speed up
(within limits, set the CPU cycles too high and your game will become jerky).
