Post subject: working problems in windows xp 64 bits |
|
|
well boys.
first of all, i'm chilean and not very good in english. i'm soory if i ain't doing very well
this thing is obvius. i'm looking for some answers and i think i've read much of the problems posted here and i'm still far from my goal.
so, here's my story
my brother is an informatic and gave me a pc for xmas. he said that this computer has a processor of 64 bit, its a dual core pentium e2160 of 1.8ghz and 1gb of ram if u need to know, and it has installed a windows xp "for 64 bits".
the damn problem is that i cant make use of any "old" program. This is for any software older than 1 year.
everytime i execute something like that appears a message sayin' it has problem with 16 bits ms-dos subsystem and has found a not permissive instruction.
this had me very frustrated because there are many things thats not working in my computer.
also it's very nostalgic to me being able to play games such loom.
that's why i made it here. i was looking for loom and i found much more
well. i'm saying goodbye and thanks
oh. and sorry if this is already answered and i'm wasting your time but i didnt find a solution for my problem in aaaaaaaall the information you had posted.
it's so much and i don't have plenty of time to read it all
thanks in advance
i'll be waiting for your help |

16 bits progs won't work in XP64, they can't.
No support for 16 bit in XP64(nor in Vista64).
And don't temper too much around with ol'16bits DLLs in XP64, chances are you gonna screw things up.
Solutions:
Easiest one : Install XP32 or Vista32 bits. Works fine on a 64 bit architecture.
Or
Install VPC2007 with W98-W2K-XP32 to run those programs.
Or
Try to get them going with MS compatibility kit (google for it)
Though in my experience that's pretty worthless ....
For dosprogs: dosbox 0.72 works flawless in XP64. |

vpc2007 emulates older versions of windows?
i'm not so troubled for runnin ol gamez.
i'm concerned because i have other programs that i need working in my pc. i'm mechanic, well i'm going to be. finishing my studies, and there are some prgrams i need ready to use fast. somethin like EFI, CARMAN SCAN, OTC.
if you know something i'd appreaciate your help

Nope, it emulates a PC whithin your PC.
In that emulated PC you can install another OS (a "GUEST" OS) and run it on its own, separated from your own PC (HOST).
VPC2007 is freeware and downloadable@MS
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/virtualpc/default.mspx
You'll need the 64 bit version of course.
That's my W98SE one:
You can run (install) anything in it from MSDos to Vista (32bits) and even several Linux(Only 32 bit versions or X86).
After installing a Windows in it you must also install the additions IN the VPC-OS.
Gives you extended video, mouse, sound and networking support.
Works pretty good.
It's pretty ressource greedy, but on your PC it should run fine. (Does on mine anyway, certainly when I boot XP64, faster then on XP32).
Drawback: It lacks a good videocard emulation, (S3Virge) so you don't have 3Dsupport within VPC, but for programs it ain't usually a problem. Only some games won't run in it. (Can only run if they have a 'software' mode).
You could also consider a dual boot XP32/XP64, but you best know that stuff, or you gonna have problems. |
