Post subject: Uhhh. Help. [WORD FOR DUMMIES] |
|
|
Okay. This is the dumbest question i have probably ever asked any of you.
I'm typing a rather long short story for my English course at school. It's my major work and is all epic and such.
So anyway, i have these page breaks in it...Like, web format with the dashed line and such. ( - - - - - - - - - )
Normally, i can just highlight and delete these lines as i see fit with backspace or delete or whatever. For some unusual reason this has changed and they no longer delete in the normal way. I am using word and i feel like such a noob asking, but how can i delete them??? And why would they have suddenly changed?
On a similar note...I was typing in my draft and scrolled down to make an edit to a lower portion. I tried to find my place, but alas, this paragraph was unfamiliar to me. I had written these words, but they were all jumbled up and in the wrong order, and some were missing.
So, uh. Please help. Preferably with as little ridicule as possible.
Thanks.
GAMER
EDIT: I've tried highlighting and deleting too.
EDIT 2: Okay. This is weird. I saved the file as "Draftweird" because i wanted to keep working...re-opened the damn thing to copy-paste to a friend to see if he could help...the damn thing was re-organised back in the right order and i could delete page breaks again!!! WHAT THE HELL?!
Microsoft strikes again.

Alright. So i'm beginning to doubt my computing skills.
SOME of the page breaks i can delete the normal way, whilst others i cannot.
WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!
GAMER
P.S. Vangar informs me that i am not in fact talking about page breaks. They are called page breaks in literature, but not it seems in the interwebz and Word. The thingy's i'm talking about are horizontal rules... (A big dashy line across the middle of the page separating one part of text from another.) |

| Maybe try saving the file as a .rtf or something, it might remove that kind of formatting. |

Hm. Saving as rich text didn't help. Select all - Clear formatting did work...but i lost all the pretty fonts and formatting that i wanted. Ah well. I'll just edit this one and put in the fonts.
I still don't get why i can't just delete them like the other ones?!
Keep suggesting things.
Thanks cyber.god and spikey.

I've ditched word long time ago, for several reasons ..... now I simply use that simple but o so handy write or OpenOffice. Won't help you much.LOLLZ.
You must have something called 'autoformat' or such enabled.
Autopage? Autopaging? Auto insert whatever it's called?
Darned those things suck. |

Haha. Well, i'd think that too...only, some of them i can delete and others i can't.
I normally like using Word...but this is crazy.

I've had this problem before too, I think. Like where you type '----' on a blank line and hit Enter, it makes a horizontal line that goes across the page ... those things are tough to get rid of.
Unless your writing has a lot of special formatting nstuff, you can select All, copy and paste the entire document into Notepad or something to remove all formatting, then copy & paste it back into Word ...
Otherwise if there is a lot of formatting, you could open a new Word document, and copy and paste each section into that ... which will likely take awhile but ... *shrugs* I dunno how else to get rid of 'em unfortunately ... |

Yeh emmzee, that's what i was talking about.
They are really lame.
I ended up just clear formatting the whole thing (the equivalent to dumping it into notepad and then back) but yeah, lost all the pretty formatting i did.
I tried to copy paste sections, but when i did, the random page break thingy's appeared where there weren't any in the original thing...
So i'd copy:
TEXT TEXT TEXT
from
TEXT TEXT TEXT BRONCO
-PAGE BREAK THING-
BASEBALL LION HOUSE
and it'd come up with a page break straight after. So yeah.
Would anyone like to read the draft? It's due in about 2 weeks and i wouldn't mind some feedback...

It's sitting at about 4000 words atm, i hope to increase it to about 7000 tomorrow evening though.
So, if you wouldn't mind reading a 7000 word story, i'll email it to you tomorrow evening.
