Yeah, I'm sure the movie is great. If only I could find a cinema that doesn't have it dubbed!

| Don't the Eastern European dubs just have some guy translating the dialogue as the English actors speak? |

Well, most countries gave up on that kind of dubbing somewhere after '96.
Now,[at least in Romania] there are different people dubbing. But in the best case scenario, the voices[and translations] are horrid! In the worst scenario, there are 2 people reading the translation! Of multiple characters! |

Movies are in American... Movie subs are usually in [good] Romanian.
Cartoons on the other hand are [if we're lucky] subbed, or [if we're unlucky, as we are in the case of The Simpsons movie] are dubbed! |

What about French movies? Would they be in English you think?
And the Chinese ones? Also in English?
The Russian ones?
There is more in this world than English or American movies. And usually they are much better than the -(recent)- Hollywood crap. |

That's because you're lazy.
Sometimes it's simply horrific , those dubbed movies.
Certainly the Chinese or Japanese ones.
Their mouth says something as "aetwi ni chan si kwa"
and you hear "it was a lovely day today my love, let's go to bed and do funny things together".
DOES NOT MATCH. |

I was just thinking about the American movies specifically. Why aren't the American movies in American talking??
When i watch French movies here they are in French. I'd much rather read English subtitles than hear bad dubbing...It'd frustrate me if the French movies were played here in English...
So...again, why aren't American movies in American language in Romania? I thought most countries did the "It's in the language it was made in and you have to read" thing?
GAMER
EDIT : I mean cartoons. Larry already explained that the movies are normally subbed. But why are the cartoons not the same?? |

Some countries always (or almost always) dub the movies.
French also, you will rarely find an English-American movie with subtitles in French theaters or even on television.
They are dubbed in French.
The HORROR.
In Belgium they are always subtitled in Dutch speaking Flanders. In the French speaking part of Belgium they use the French dubbed stuff.
The Netherlands also usually use subtitles.
I guess it's cultural. Or some are simply really too lazy to read the subs.
Of course it's probably also a matter of possibility.
English <-> French can be dubbed in an relative acceptable way, they belong to the same lingual family.
English to Dutch can't as Dutch is an completely different language, you can't match the mouth/sounds. Impossible.
You would get the same as the Chinese-Japanese movies that are dubbed in English, ridicule effects.
*Edit also
Cartoons here are half/half. Some are dubbed, some are subtitled.
Mostly depend of the age target, for the youngest they are always dubbed, for the older it depends of the financial impact of the cartoons. Cartoons that are popular are dubbed, the others not. |

What he said!
Take the daily 1:00 pm [ugh] Mickey Mouse cartoons. They're targeted at a younger audience(as in, 3-7), and they are perfectly dubbed. Even the dub voices sound like the originals(but the translation/phrasing is sometimes a bit off[sometimes I wondered if the translations were made by real Romanian-speakers ]), while the Saturday/Sunday morning's "Invasion America" is subbed!
But the real pain in the ass with dubs is that they're sometimes [way] off! If you take any random episode from any random cartoon series that was aired before 1996, you could hear the (1, 2, rarely 4)reader[s], adding material. Imagine hearing Goku shouting "Mate!"(=wait, yeah we had the Japanese version) and 2 seconds later, hear the reader "Oh, wait! Hey, you! I said wait! WAAAAAAAITTTTT!"
It sucks! That's why I gave up watching cartoons on TV.[/rant]
edit: I think we should have a [detailed] poll on this!

Maybe you're just getting older Larry, and don't enjoy cartoons the same way anymore.
Or you're moved to pron now. |

Doubtful. At least judging from the oh-say 20 DVDs filled with cartoons(provided, mainly anime) I acquired this month it would seem that way! |

Subtitles for movies, dubbing for cartoons.
As it is commonly in Finland. |
